The Type 56 assault rifle is the Chinese variant of the Russian designed and produced AK-47 and AKM assault rifles.
The gun first began production in 1956 at State Factory 66 and continued so until 1973 when the responsibility of its manufacture was handed over to Norinco who continues to produce the rifle.
